History – Before Living Memory

Before World War 11 Woodberry Down was an area of grand houses with large gardens owned by wealthy politicians and business men. Within ten years these houses given away to the London County Council estate.

But in order to understand fully how this transformation came about, we must first go back nearly 400 years – to the reign of King James 1.

The Origins Of Woodberry Down

It would appear that the earliest reference to Woodberry Down is on “The map of the demesnes of the Manor of Stoke Newington in the county of Middlesex made by order f Lady Absey 1734”this shows Wood Berry Down Meadow, the largest field in the area which eventually gave its name to the whole neighbourhood.

Much more recently, in 1960’s and 1790’s, people came from all over to live in Woodberry Down, area’s such as Canning Town, Hackney, Whitechapel, Marylebone and Islington.
